It was a peaceful night's sleep

Every night as I lay there beside you

Either on the phone or in person

For the first time

In a long time

I'd awake feeling rested

What was it about you that made me feel so at peace

As I slipped off into a place where my dreams seem so much better than my reality

So euphoric

I almost didn't wish to return

A reality where wars run rampant

In the physical

For the world

But for me

In my mind

Fast forward a few years

Three to be exact

It's been six months since we last spoke

Four if you count that text you sent

Somehow you still cross my mind

Especially in the wee hours of the morning as I lie awake

While music plays on my phone

Song after song 

A different tune

Yet it all feels like the same song has been on repeat

The same sad song I've been singing for years

Long before I met you

Somehow in me 

At first at least

You brought out a sense of peace

Wish you'd lay here next to me

Just one last time

So I can go back to sleep
